Description

In 2005, a groundbreaking initiative emerged from the heart of Palestine. Riwaq embarked on its visionary 50 Villages Project, a monumental endeavor to breathe new life into the very essence of Palestinian heritage. This initiative is not merely about restoration but a profound commitment to revitalizing the historical pulse of 50 villages, each bearing the weight of centuries of culture and tradition. Riwaq’s Registry of Historic Buildings in Palestine (1994-2006), which documented 50,320 historic buildings in 422 villages and towns in “Minor Palestine” (the West Bank and Gaza Strip), provided the necessary data to determine that saving 50 villages/towns would result in saving almost 50% of the cultural heritage in Palestine.

Author

  • Since 1991, RIWAQ has recognized the challenging complexities of preserving Palestinian collective memory through projects that document and restore architectural heritage sites across the West Bank and Gaza. Harnessing the energy and skills of students, architects, archaeologists, and historians, RIWAQ embarked on the Registry of Historic Buildings, a thirteen year project (1994-2007) resulting in the publication of three volumes that include detailed histories, maps, and photos of approximately 420 villages in sixteen districts across the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza.
